Overdraft Protection

Life happens! The NIH Federal Credit Union knows that mistakes occur from time to time. Fortunately, we offer three options that can provide assistance.

Overdraft Protection

This pays overdrafts with no charge by automatically moving money from your savings account to your checking account, if funds are available (limited to 6 transfers per month combined with other transfers).
Members can also apply for a Checkmate Line of Credit1 as a source of overdraft protection with no per-item overdraft fees. Apply for a Checkmate Line of Credit

Courtesy Pay

Allows eligible accounts2 to be overdrawn up to $700 when the available balance in your checking account is insufficient and other sources of overdraft protection are exhausted. Even with overdraft protection, Courtesy Pay is an important secondary coverage program as indicated below.

  • Automatic protection on eligible accounts

  • A $30 fee will be assessed for each overdraft

  • Total overdrafts cannot exceed $700, including fees

  • Does not require credit approval

Courtesy Pay Plus

An optional upgrade to Courtesy Pay to also cover ATM and everyday debit card transactions. You must consent to take advantage of this option. A $30 fee will be assessed for each overdraft.

Confused about selecting the option that's right for you? Compare your overdraft options or contact a representative for help.

Ways to Avoid Overdraft

One of the best ways to prevent overdrafts is to monitor your balances. At the NIHFCU, you have access to many free, easy and convenient tools to help you stay in touch with accounts and avoid overdrawing your funds.

Free Online Banking - fast, secure, 24/365 access to your accounts from your PC

Free Mobile Banking - Secure, convenient on-the-go access on your smartphone or tablet.

Account Alerts - Receive emails or text messages with balance updates and other information you select

By adding Debit Card Overdraft Services, you may be allowed to continue with a purchase and deposit or transfer funds before the posted cutoff time on the same business day to cover the transaction.
