Membership Eligibility

You’re eligible to join us in two ways.

Employment/Profession in MD, DC, NC, VA or WV1

  • An employee, independent contractor, or self-employed person who works regularly in the healthcare and biomedical industries (in the above geographies).

  • An employee of the National Institutes of Health (in the above geographies).

  • A credentialed NIH contractor who provides direct healthcare or biomedical re-search/services (in the above geographies).

  • Persons retired as pensioners or annuitants from the above employment (and living in the above geographies).

  • An employee of the NIHFCU

Immediate family of a current NIHFCU member - regardless of profession or geography.

  • Spouse

  • Child or Step-Child

  • Sibling or Step-Sibling

  • Parent or Step-Parent

  • Grandparent

  • Grandchild

  • Adoptee

  • People living in and sharing joint financial responsibilities of the sponsoring member’s household

For speed and convenience, you can Apply Online from your home or office in just minutes. Or, you can always stop by any NIHFCU branch, or mail 2 us a paper application.2

You will need the following to complete your application2,3,4

  • $25 minimum deposit into your share (savings) account to establish membership

  • Government issued photo ID (i.e. Driver's license, passport, etc.)

  • Proof of NIHFCU eligibility (i.e. work ID, pay stub, etc.)

  • Your Social Security Number / Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

Note: For the security of your account and the Credit Union, all new accounts are verified through Deluxe Detect and are subject to the requirements of the Patriot Act. To help the government fight the funding of terrorism and money laundering activities, federal law requires all financial institutions to obtain, verify, and record information that identifies each person who opens an account. What this means for you: When you open an account, we will ask for your name, street address, date of birth, tax identification number and other information that will identify you. We may ask to see your driver’s license and/or other identifying documents.

2 Membership applications submitted by mail must be notarized.

3 You must be at least 18 years of age for an individual membership. If you are under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must be a joint owner with you on the account and an NIHFCU member.
