As the nation's largest credit union serving the biomedical industry, we promise to deliver affordable loans and banking solutions that save our members time and money.
On January 11, 1940 the NIH Federal Credit Union (NIHFCU) was created by employees of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). They gathered their financial resources to help others achieve a better quality of life through financial independence. These nine founders sought a more economical alternative to banks that would help their co-workers and families meet their financial needs. Since then, NIHFCU has grown to be a thriving financial institution of over 40,000 members. The NIHFCU is one of Maryland’s largest credit unions and is proud to be the nation’s largest serving the biomedical industry. View the NIHFCU video.
For over 75 years, the NIHFCU primarily served the needs of the NIH community and a small list of select hospitals and related institutions. The Story Behind the NIHFCU Logo
In 2011, the NIHFCU unveiled a high-energy and simple logo - reflective of our continued spirit to serve the dedicated men and women of the biomedical industry. The four pillars represent the primary sectors that comprise the Credit Union's membership: researchers, administrators, doctors, and healthcare professionals. While the distinctive colors celebrate the uniqueness of each sector, the pillars are clustered to symbolize unity and a commonality of purpose. Finally, the bold NIH letters are a tribute to our heritage, their international style representing both the global reach and cultural diversity of the industry we serve.
